Embarking on a mushroom journey can be an extraordinary experience, one that offers a unique opportunity for introspection, self-discovery, and expanded consciousness. As individuals explore the depths of their minds and traverse the realms of perception, the world around them can take on an enchanting new hue. During this altered state, engaging in carefully selected activities can further amplify the depth and richness of the experience. While there can be many things to do on shrooms, we present you a curated list of 15 captivating and immersive activities to consider.
These suggestions aim to enhance your journey, encouraging a deeper connection with the self, the environment, and the world of imagination. It is crucial to approach these activities with an open mind, prioritizing personal safety, comfort, and the creation of a supportive setting.
Whether you’re seeking introspection, creative expression, or a harmonious connection with nature, this collection of experiences offers a diverse range of options to enrich your mushroom journey. Remember that individual preferences and sensitivities can vary, so it’s important to choose activities that resonate with you and align with your comfort level. In addition, the dose you take matters. Higher doses (3.0g) will make it hard to do much of anything in public, so refrain from taking high doses in public. Moderate doses (2.0g-2.5g) can be good for creative endeavors and nature walks, while lower doses (1.0-2.0g) can be good social doses for places like museums and discotheques. For some of the more introspective recommendations, it is always best to integrate them into your life by talking with a therapist about what might have spur up during your trip. With that being established, let’s begin!

1. Go on a Nature Walk
Unarguably, one of the best things to do on shrooms is to be around nature. Mushrooms can make you feel closer to the living things around you and help you appreciate the beauty that lies in every organism. If you are not particularly experienced with mushrooms, it is best to have a trusted sober person to accompany you, just in case the experience gets uncomfortable at any second. Find a local park, or better yet, a hiking trail where you can roam. Look at the way every tree seems to breathe or the way the canopy of leaves forms figures based on your imagination. The experience of being in nature while on shrooms is one of feeling one with your surroundings and being reminded of the fragility and beauty of life, and research has shown the positive effects of this. Bring this knowledge with you after your trip ends and integrate it into your life to feel closer to everything around you.
2. Listen to Music
Anyone who has gone on a psychedelic trip can attest that music sounds different. It is hard to explain to someone who has not partaken on a trip, but it is one of the best things to do on shrooms (and really any psychedelic). Find an album that is cohesive from start to end, and the music will be elevated to new heights. You will start picking out layers in the music you hadn’t heard before, and on high doses, you may even experience synesthesia. Some albums I recommend are Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd, Discovery by Daft Punk, I Love You Jennifer B by Jockstrap, and Le fil by Camille. You can also check out some of your favorite bands’ live albums to feel immersed in the experience. It is like attending a concert without leaving your home.
3. Make Art
One of my personal favorite things to do on shrooms is to make art. You don’t even have to consider yourself an artist to make some art while tripping. Let your trip guide your art – you’ll be surprised what you can make. Do not think about it too much and it will feel like your hand is moving on its own, and before you know it, you are creating some form of art. Colors are more vibrant while tripping, so play with colors in your art. I recommend using watercolors or pastels, as they are easy to work with and really fun to blend colors. If you are out of practice in making any sort of art, don’t stress. Let yourself revert back to a place of artistic teenage confidence and creativity, where you are simply doodling to pass the time. There is no one to judge your art after your trip, so don’t feel pressured to create a masterpiece.
4. Go Dancing
More and more people are finding mushrooms to be a fun choice of drugs for the dancefloor. Of course, dose matters, so make sure you are not taking a full dose. This works best around a lower dose of around 1.5 grams; it’s enough to feel the effects, but not enough for the effects to weigh you down. We established that music sounds different during a trip, and being around it with the volume blasting and colorful lights shining throughout the room is a perfect way to elevate the experience. Psychedelics can make your body feel looser, so don’t be shy – go to the dancefloor! Just make sure you are not mixing mushrooms with another drug or alcohol, and stay hydrated throughout the night!
5. Watch a Movie
I am not sure about you, but I love watching movies while on any psychedelic. It’s a great thing to do on shrooms. It’s a weird, trippy experience seeing a movie through an altered mental state. Your viewing experience will differ based on your dose. Lower doses will simply make colors pop out more and people’s faces look a little wonky, but higher doses could make it feel like the film is talking to you or make you go through personal introspection during certain scenes. I would recommend watching animated movies due to the plethora of colors. Some of my favorite include Ponyo, Moana, and Fantasia 2000. If animation is not really your cuppa, then you could opt for something trippy and mind-bending. Some examples of these could be Paprika; Synecdoche, New York; and The Holy Mountain. Or you could just watch your favorite movie while on shrooms and find comfort in something you love. Nature documentaries are also great to watch while on mushrooms. I’d recommend opting for Planet Earth, Blue Planet, or Microcosmos. Experimental documentary movies such as Baraka or Samsara are also some of the best to watch while tripping due to their lack of dialogue and soothing ambient soundtrack with stunning visuals. If you are not into any of this, then simply watch your favorite movie and find comfort in something you are already familiar with! No wrong choice here. Maybe stay away from horror though unless you are really brave and don’t mind possibly experiencing a bad trip or entering a paranoid state.
6. Make Music
Not only does music sound different while tripping, but making music is its own unique experience, too. During my trips, this is mostly what I do. I lock myself in my room, turn my looper on, plug some synths in, and hit record. Making music is one of the most fun things to do on shrooms. Experiment with high amounts of delay and reverb to add that quintessential psychedelic sound. If you are not musically inclined, perhaps this is the best time to expose yourself to music! Do you have a guitar laying around that you never touch? Tune it up and start learning how to play it while on shrooms. It sounds like a daunting task, but you will be surprise all that your mind can learn while in altered states of consciousness. And remember, you do not need expensive equipment to make music. Lean into the French sensibilities of musique concrète and record sounds around your home or in nature that interest you, edit them on your computer with effects, and assemble a song in a sort of musical sound collage way. Your creativity has no bounds, and anything can be music. If you already know how to play an instrument, then experiment with chord progressions and effects. You could even try and learn some quick music theory. If you don’t play instruments, and perhaps your voice is your instrument, then experiment with new singing techniques. I have experienced that my voice is much looser and can hit notes I usually can’t when sober, so take advantage of this and record your best Mariah moment! If you are wanting to start making some music but don’t know where to start, resort to some free software to make your life easy. Apple users get GarageBand for free on their laptops and on their phones, which comes with a myriad of instrument presets, drums, and loops. If you are on Windows, then try out a free trial of Ableton Live!
7. Go to a Museum
To preface this, this really can only be done with a manageable dose. Do not attempt to go to a museum, or really anywhere, while on a high dose. High doses can make you experience a body load that makes your body feel heavy. Not to mention, higher doses can make you disconnect from reality for a bit, so being in public for this is not something you want. With that being said, a low to moderate dose of mushrooms can make a museum trip very enjoyable. Anything under 2.0 grams can be manageable for many, just make sure you have a trusted sober person who is around who can drive you home, in case you do not feel good. Never drive while on shrooms! The first time I ever tripped on mushrooms, a friend took me to a museum, and it was an incredible experience. Museum visits is one of the best things to do on shrooms. If your local art museum has a surrealism wing, definitely check it out. I often think about experiencing Magritte’s La clef de verre while on 2 grams of mushrooms and feeling as if I was looking out of a window into a vast mountainous horizon rather than looking at a flat painting. If art is not your thing, then check out your local science museum or aquarium!
8. Do Yoga
While the modern western implementation of yoga in studios often does not cover the breadth of its history and importance in Hindu and Buddhist cultures, the fact is that yoga can be a deeply spiritual practice. Many devote their lives to it to perfect a certain branch of it and can reach psychedelic-like states like nirvana after years of practice. Mushrooms can make your body feel looser and practicing yoga can lead to some very good sessions that help you with your mobility and flexibility. In addition, it can serve as a way of destressing and feeling in tune with yourself and your surroundings. The spiritual history of yoga mixed with psychedelics can help you start exploring your favorite branch of yoga and integrate it into your own life. Practicing yoga can be one of the most healing, relaxing things to do on shrooms.
9. Journal
Writing your thoughts down in a journal can be one of the most beneficial things to do on shrooms, as it can help you learn more about your state of being. Your mind is more open and certain memories, thoughts, or feelings may spur up throughout the trip, so instead of ruminating on these thoughts during or after your trip, it is best to write them down. If any particular feeling or memory is coming up to the surface during your trip, whether it be good or bad, try and explore it further through journaling. If you do not know how to journal or don’t know what to write, do not overthink it. Simply put pen to paper and let the mushrooms guide you. Many times, your subconscious will take over and pour words onto the paper. Lean into the practice of stream of consciousness writing and revisit your writings after your trip. You may be surprised at what came out onto the page. After doing so, take some time to break down what came out and, if necessary, talk about it with a trusted friend or therapist. Mushrooms open us up to explore our experiences and feelings more easily, so journaling while tripping will give you a deeper insight into your subconscious and help you learn more about yourself. Always remember to integrate your trip after you sober up to gain the most benefit from it.
10. Meditate
I would recommend you meditate before your trip, as it can help you be ready for the experience. But meditating is one of the best things to do on shrooms. On higher doses, you can experience closed-eye visuals and meditating can make potentiate this. Focus on your breathing and let all thoughts pass by like waves in the sea. You can do this from 5 minutes up to however long you want. You may experience out-of-body experiences during deep meditation, so do not be scared if you feel like you are drifting from reality while meditating – just go with the flow and see where your trip wants to take you! Meditating can also make challenging or bad trips more manageable by focusing on your breath and letting the anxiety and fear that you may be experiencing melt away with every exhale.
11. Decorate Your Home
Many people I talk to always raise an eyebrow when I mention I decorate my apartment while on psychedelics. While I usually do it on acid, mushrooms work well, too! This may be harder to do while on higher doses, but take advantage of how the world feels a little more 3D (if you know, you know) and how colors are more vibrant while on a trip. Personally, while tripping, I have a better sense of spatial awareness that allows me to mentally plan out what exactly a room needs to make it more comfy or cohesive based on my personal style. If you like experiencing colors while tripping, add pops of colors in your home to elevate your experience while tripping. Use your trips to show you where color may be missing or where there is a lack of decorating balance and begin working on your space once sober. Make intentional (and tactful) design choices to make your space the perfect place to trip. If you have zero idea of where to start, find some inspiration in postmodernism or retrofuturism interior design. If you lean more toward minimalism, then making the few pieces one owns unique and statement pieces can elevate your space. Interior design while tripping is one of my favorite things to do, so don’t be afraid to try it out!
12. Have a Deep Conversation
Sometimes, a shroom trip can make you have certain “Aha!” moments. Whether it be about your own life or about more complex concepts like physics, mathematics, or religion. Instead of keeping it in your head, why not talk it out with a trusted individual? And listen, listening to a person on shrooms talk can be a lot, so make sure your friend knows you are on mushrooms and that they are willing to engage in discussion with you in this state. Having a conversation while on shrooms can be difficult at times, as you may lose your train of thought or forget a certain word you wanted to use, but having discourse with a trusted person who can match your energy, keep you focused, and be engaged in the conversation can be a great way to spend some time while during a trip. Tackling philosophical concepts can open up a very productive and enlightening discussion that can help you see the world, your friend, or even yourself differently. A fair warning, being in an altered state of consciousness can leave you in a vulnerable, susceptible state where everything may sound like fact. Remember to do your own research after any conversation you have to not fall victim of accidental drug-induced misinformation.
13. Take a Shower
A great way to elevate any mushroom trip is to take a shower during it. A shower can make you feel refreshed, renewed, and can completely change the vibe of the trip. Put some music on, maybe light an incense or a candle, and take a nice shower. I lean on the side of hot showers, but if that’s not your thing, totally fine. Personally, I have found that hot steamy showers can increase the effects of the mushrooms, perhaps because of the increased body temperature, so you may peak during your shower without even knowing it was going to happen. The feeling of water on the body while tripping is really soothing and you may find yourself losing track of time, so don’t spend your while trip in the shower though! On the other hand, taking a shower before a mushroom trip can make you feel effervescent, radiant, and help start your trip on a good note, so that is always a good practice to have!
14. Engage in Self-Reflection
Taking mushrooms will teach you a lot about yourself. Before any trip, you should have an intention on why you were even taking them in the first place, so whatever that may be, take a time during your trip to do some self-reflection on this intention. As well as simply having some self-reflection on your life and see how you are. How is your mental state? Are you happy with where you are in life? Do you like your job? Do you tell your loved ones you love them enough? Are you living the life you want? Etc, etc, etc. Taking some time during your mushroom trip to reflect upon yourself and life can be hugely beneficial in showing you where you may be unhappy and therefore fix those parts during your integration and post-integration practices of your trip. Specially on higher doses, having moments of self-reflection can serve as a “reset” and guide you to the life path you want to be on.
15. Process Your Emotions
If you feel certain emotions spur up throughout your life, such as anger, sadness, etc., then exploring these emotions during a trip can be beneficial and allow you to get to know yourself better. Perhaps you have felt bogged down by life and just need a nice cry – let it out during your trip. Perhaps you have a lot of anger toward an ex-boyfriend/girlfriend and it’s been clawing at the back of your mind for the past couple of months – write out that anger on a note and release it from your being. Mushrooms allow you to be in touch with yourself and feel emotions more intensely, so take this time to process whatever emotion you feel you need to work on. It is a good idea to revisit this processing with a certified mental health practitioner to further explore the root of them. Processing your emotions can be an incredibly liberating experience that can make room for you to be able to be receptive to new experiences.
